| Technical FAQs |
||
| If you have a question that is not answered here, submit it to the webmaster. If your question is one that is asked by others, it will be entered in the Frequently Asked Questions. There are also FAQs for the First Look text and web site contents and General Site Use. | ||
| How to use the site | ||
| How can I see the Legend when I go to the Text Compare table? It's difficult to remember the author names associated with the initials in the column headers. | ||
| There are two options:
First, when you are looking at the test comparison table, you can see the text names as you move the cursor over the initials in the column header. Second, you can use the Back button on your browser to go back to the legend page. Then, use the Forward button to return to the place you were at in the comparison table. (This technique also works at other places in the site, such as moving between the Instructor's Manual contents and specific chapters). Design philosophy: Because the text comparison table is large and we have to anticipate a wide range of monitor sizes and browser types we tried to make it compatible for as many users as possible. So, we purposely avoided the use of floating windows because they require browsers with Java capability and monitors large enough so the legend window would not cover up the table itself. |

| Technical problems | ||
| I'm having trouble downloading a file. I just want to copy it to my hard drive, but it starts Word (or Excel, or Acrobat Reader, etc) and shows the document. | ||
| What happens when you click on a file link depends on your computer.
Some computers may bring up a dialog box asking if you wish to Open the file or Save it to disk. If you select Open, you must have the program that file needs. If certain files are associated with specific programs on your computer, clicking on a download will cause that program to run and open the document. If that happens and you also want to save the file you can use File / Save As to save a copy on your own computer. On Windows 95 and above, if you simply want to download the file without opening it, right click on the link and a submenu appears. Select the "Save target as" option. |
||
| How do I send email within the site? Nothing happens when I click on an email link. | ||
| There are two ways that email is sent within most web sites:
The results of some forms in the site are emailed by the site itself, bypassing your own email program. These should work in all cases. To send a message from an email link ("email Em"), the site tries to open your email program. In order to do this, you must have identified your email program to your web browser. Go to Options or Preferences using your web browser menus and find the Programs options. You should see a box marked Email with a drop-down list of available email programs on your computer. Select the program you use to send and receive email (Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, Pegasus, etc.). |
||
| Why do you not show email addresses on the site? | ||
| In order to reduce spam for Em Griffin and others, we use a script that hides the email address in the page code so it is not easily detected by the robots and web crawlers that harvest email addresses. Once you click on the email option, you will see the address in your email program, so you can save it from there. | ||

If you do not see navigation menus above and to the left, you likely got here from a search engine, external link, or by typing the URL in your browser. Please go to the First Look Home Page and make your selection there. Referred from: Unknown |
