Obtaining copies of A First Look at Communciation Theory

Print versions

McGraw-Hill provides the following options for obtaining a print copy of the 10th edition.

  • Create. McGraw-Hill’s Create program allows you to create a custom text for your course. You can choose which chapters you want to include from the 10th edition, and you can even include chapters from other McGraw-Hill books in your custom reader. You can even choose how and whether the book is bound. Get started making your custom copy here.

  • Looseleaf. This version of the book comes in loose pages that are three-hole punched. It is available from Amazon and McGraw-Hill.

  • Rental. McGraw-Hill recently launched a new textbook rental platform for their books. To learn more about it, we recommend contacting your McGraw-Hill learning technology rep or your campus bookstore. You can also rent teh book through Amazon.

  • Bounded print version of the book. McGraw-Hill has decided to no longer produce the complete bound print copy of the book as they have done in the past. This is a company-wide policy that applies to all McGraw-Hill textbooks published in 2018 (with a 2019 copyright date) and in the future. Instead, they are emphasizing rental and online options. As authors, we were not consulted about this choice before it was implemented. The traditional bound book has been our most popular option for instructors across previous editions, so we understand if you are disappointed to hear of this change. If you are concerned, we recommend sharing your thoughts with your McGraw-Hill learning technology rep. If you want to assign a traditional print copy to your students, you can use Create to make a version of the book that includes all of the chapters.

Digital versions

  • Kindle. The book is available for purchase on Amazon in Kindle format. Once purchased, you own this digital version forever.

  • Connect. McGraw-Hill’s Connect program (also known as “SmartBook”) aims to provide an interactive experience for the reader. Students take quizzes as they read, and the program seeks to guide the student in a way that helps them learn material they don’t understand.

However, as authors, we have significant concerns about the quality of the Connect offering. Connect highlights text in yellow that it wants students to read, with other text grayed out. The text selected for highlighting displays a systematic bias against examples and critiques that are key elements of learning theory. If students try to read the grayed-out text, the program verbally instructs them to instead return to the yellow text. Instructors cannot control what text is highlighted. In the end, students get a distorted reading experience that does not reflect the text as we have written it. We have also observed that the probes developed for Connect lack quality.

The Connect option is available as a digital rental or in combination with a looseleaf copy of the book. If you wish to explore this option, we recommend contacting your McGraw-Hill learning technology rep.
