Meet the Consultants
Playing a prominent role with the eighth edition of the book are two colleagues I would like you to meet—Em.
After considering Physics as a major in 1971, I decided to study communication. I’m still studying. I was fortunate enough to have Em Griffin as one of my first professors and he’s been my good friend ever since.
I joined the faculty at Purdue University in 1986 where I teach, conduct research, and have served the last ten years in administration. Currently, I’m the Associate Head of the Brian Lamb School of Communication.
I enjoy writing about media effects and interpersonal communication. On a less scholarly note, I’ve recently completed a short memoir of what it was like to grow up in a family that ran a doughnut shop.

Like many of you, A First Look was my introduction to communication theory. In fact, reading the book while a student at Wheaton College inspired me to seek graduate study in communication at the University of Kansas. I’m now an assistant professor at Texas Christian University where I teach courses on communication theory, research methods, and social networking sites.
My research program investigates how people maintain interpersonal relationships through communication technology. Read more about my professional life, including my curriculum vitae
I married my wife, Jessica, six years ago. She teaches courses in business law and serves as an international officer for her sorority. We have two young daughters, Sydney and Kira, who bring deep joy into our lives every day. In my free time, I enjoy reading novels, playing video games, cooking, and spending time with friends.
